Reflection

It’s easy to acclimate a sinful nature to the patterns of this world. Conversely, it takes deliberate effort to turn our attention away from the world and toward our Maker. When we do that, we not only renew our minds, as today’s verse clarifies, but we condition ourselves to align with the ways of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While our sinful inclinations may never disappear completely on this side of eternity, God equips us to combat them for our good and His glory.

That’s why the subtle changes we make over time are crucial. Today, I may feel strong in my faith, but it doesn’t take long for a slippery slope of compromise to arrive if I don’t keep my mind in the right place. For instance, if I allow my attention to drift toward the patterns this world finds acceptable, I would slowly erode my conviction to fear the Lord and to obey God’s commands. We may attend Church on Sunday, but if we don’t make it a habit to sustain our spiritual discipline beyond Sunday morning, we open the door for trouble.

I know I have faced this dilemma. First, I may allow myself to watch a morally questionable TV show. Then, perhaps I don’t attend Bible study for a week or two in a row. Suddenly, I gravitate toward secular music instead of praise and worship music. The nail in the coffin comes when I have chosen to spend more time surrounding myself with some friends who don’t share my faith as often as my Church friends. If this track continues for a prolonged period, it’s only a matter of time before my spiritual discipline is in shambles.

In a short time frame, I would have transitioned from living as a faithful believer to drifting into alignment with the world’s ways. I would need to feast on God’s Word, turn things around quickly, and repent of any newly established pattern of sinful behavior. Otherwise, there’s no telling how much further I would fall before God may use more drastic measures to draw me back into the fold. We know God corrects those He loves, but there’s wisdom in learning our lesson before we reach rock bottom.

Both today’s verse of the day and today’s quote suggest we don’t let it come to that. We want to submit to God’s will and avoid conforming to the spiritually risky habits the culture would have us believe are normal. In isolation, one of these decisions is not necessarily sinful. The problem comes when they become a form of idolatry and disrupt the intimacy we have with Jesus Christ. It would be legalistic to look at someone who exercised their Christian liberty to make a decision similar to the ones above and judge them harshly.

You aren’t any less of a Christian because you watched a worldly TV show or listened to a secular song. My point is that, in the aggregate and over an extended time frame, these seemingly harmless distractions can become footholds or strongholds that the devil would love to captivate our attention with (2 Corinthians 10:4-6). As soon as we realize we are not redeeming the time, we should establish better habits that honor God. There’s no need to wait for these issues to become idolatrous or establish that stronghold to repent.

That’s where we must reflect on verses like Romans 12:2 and adhere to its suggestion: “be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” We can pray to God and confess that we’ve drifted away from His ideal path. The longer we live a lifestyle of persistent concession to sin, the more challenging it becomes to rectify our path. The more we delve into questionable territory with our thoughts, life, actions, and habits, the more acceptable we will find them. What we once considered a spiritual crisis suddenly becomes more palpable and less convicting (Hebrews 3:8-15). That’s the last thing we want if our goal is to please God.

Application

Since our hearts are easily captivated by the allures of this world, we need to be vigilant (1 John 2:16, 1 Peter 5:8). We must guard our hearts and minds in Jesus Christ. In a previous devotional, we discussed the impact our thoughts (Philippians 4:8), words (Proverbs 16:3, Proverbs 18:21), and actions (Ephesians 4:32) have on our dynamic with unbelievers. But all of this starts with us, and the same principles apply. However, our priorities are not in order if we’re more concerned about how others perceive us than our behavior. We must start with ourselves first. God is our ultimate audience. Our chief concern isn’t optics with others and maintaining a good reputation with them.

Mankind’s opinions are fickle, and people can turn on us at the drop of a hat. God’s knowledge of our character, who we are, our intentions, and our motivations for everything we do matter more. Of course, I am not saying that a reputation with men isn’t valuable; on the contrary, it’s a blessing when others look up to you for the right reasons. It simply requires us to emphasize God’s perspective on us first and foremost.

There are times when God will allow us, in this lifetime, to have a good reputation in the eyes of God and man (Proverbs 3:3-4). But if you are in a situation where you must choose, the former is unfathomably more meaningful than the latter.

My challenge to you and myself is to focus on God in whatever season you’re in. Let’s not get caught up in dwelling on the past (Isaiah 43:18-21), worrying about the future (Matthew 6:34), or trying to force things to happen in our timing. Everything will always fall into place according to His will (Romans 8:28); keep putting Him first in as many aspects of your life as possible (Matthew 6:33).

Embrace the season you find yourself in (Ecclesiastes 3:1-9). Trust God has a reason for the situation in which He has placed you. There’s no need to doubt Him. We need to immerse ourselves in His will. All the other things we want, which are not essentials but perhaps important life goals for us, will come if they align with God’s will. If they’re not part of His plan for us, He will protect His children from those things that are more of a liability than a blessing (Psalm 46:1).

We don’t need to focus so much on life’s extras. Focus on Him and His kingdom. If we have Jesus Christ, we have everything, and if we have everything else, we have nothing of eternal value (Mark 8:36-37).

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for another day of life. Thank You for the gift of salvation and the opportunity to store Heavenly Treasures. Please help me focus on matters of eternal significance. I desire to entertain thoughts that are pleasing to You.

I have opened the door to unnecessary exposure to the world many times. Acclimating to the world is no badge of honor for any of us. As Your children, we should exemplify critical distinctions in our lifestyle.

Please help me not to become self-righteous nor think of myself more highly than I should. If it were up to me and my strength, I know it’s only a matter of time before my morals fade into compromise. I must rely on You for guidance. Please help me maintain the discipline and motivation to always turn to You and Your Word for sustenance.

The world and its fleeting treasures, accolades, and trends will never satisfy my soul. Only in Jesus Christ, Your Son, can I find everything I need. Without Him, I am nothing and cannot do anything of eternal significance. But with Him, I know I am empowered to make a difference for Your glory and my good.

Please help me stay focused on Your mission. To find lasting satisfaction, I need a sense of purpose that I only see in You. Your Word is my moral compass, and I know I wouldn’t have the capacity to navigate this world without You.

Please forgive me, dear God, for all of my sins. Thank You for drawing me to You and saving me. I must remember that part of the mission You’ve assigned to me includes discipleship, teaching, and evangelism. Thank You for giving me the strength, wisdom, and discretion I need to accomplish Your will. I need Your continuous help to persevere. I want to surrender every area of my life to You and submit to Your sovereignty.

Please help me with every significant decision point and steer me far away from the world. I know that I am in the world, but I am not of the world. Thank You for all You have done, still do, and will continue to do with me. It’s an honor that You would see it fit to use a morally bankrupt sinner like me to do anything of eternal magnitude, but I believe that’s what You’re doing, and I am grateful for it.

Many of our ancestors whom You involved in Your plan were among the least likely to partake in Your purpose, yet You still used them. I could never repay You or thank You enough for calling me to make a meaningful difference for Your kingdom.

I pray that many fellow children of God will see the same opportunity to open themselves to You and to utilize their gifts, talents, and resources to pursue the avenues of service You have placed in their hearts.

May Your will be done in my life and the lives of those around me.

Reflection

Few passages in Scripture have comforted believers more than Psalm 23. Just as God faithfully shepherded David through life’s darkest valleys, He promises to be with His children today. We don’t have to spiral into despair because our Good Shepherd guides, protects, and comforts us. Through Jesus Christ, even the sting of death has been overcome (1 Corinthians 15:55–57).

Who better to entrust with our well-being than the Creator of the Universe? He knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13-15). God knows our every weakness, and when we face trouble beyond our capacity, He faithfully provides the grace we need to endure (Isaiah 25:4).

While we can consider the valley to represent death itself, it may also signify situations of darkness, peril, trials, or opposition. Whether facing a physical or spiritual obstacle or foe, God faithfully remained with King David. Likewise, He will not abandon His children (Deuteronomy 31:8, Hebrews 13:5).

When our faith is greater than our fears and God’s sovereignty is magnified over the world’s peril, we recognize that there’s no need to become weary in the face of adversity (Mark 5:36, Galatians 6:9), especially since God is with us and actively assists us at all times (Joshua 1:9).

The latter portion of today’s passage speaks of the rod and staff of God. The metaphor comes from the way a shepherd tends his sheep. In this case, you and I are the sheep.

Sometimes, God lovingly gives us a gentle nudge or tug back onto the right path when we’ve begun to drift. Other times, the shepherd would use the staff to protect the sheep from wild animals and other threats to the flock.

When a sheep wanders quite far from the rest of the flock, the curved edge is necessary to pull it back in with the herd. Many of us have experienced that kind of correction, and while it is unpleasant at the moment, we are so grateful that God has done so out of His vast love for us (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

There’s a reason why Jesus Christ is called the Good Shepherd. Not only does He actively protect us, but He willingly gave His life for us, His sheep, in the process (John 10:11-18). Our focus must remain on our Savior and recall His unfathomable grace towards each of us.

Today’s quote helps us remember exactly that. Jesus Christ lights the way for us. As the forerunner, He has already won the war on our behalf (Hebrews 6:20). Take comfort in His presence today and lean on Him at all times.

Application

Have you ever faced a dire season or deep trial? Perhaps you have even faced a near-death experience. Praise God that He saw it fit to help you get through it and survive that adversity. We shouldn’t wait for these times to draw closer to God (James 4:8), but when we encounter them, we are prudent to trust Him wholeheartedly (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Nothing can separate us from the love of God (Romans 8:35-39). That includes the “shadow of death.” Isn’t it awesome that the One who knows us better than we know ourselves, loves us more than we love ourselves, and has our best interests at heart, is always with us?

God is one prayer away from us at all times. The Holy Spirit dwells inside our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19)! Our proximity to our Savior, Jesus Christ, shouldn’t come from the ups and downs of our life’s circumstances. We will never match His unwavering loyalty and incalculable love towards us. However, we should do everything we can to seek His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33), win souls for Jesus Christ (Proverbs 11:30), make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20), discover our purpose through Him (Psalm 138:8), and follow His commands (Deuteronomy 13:4).

Though we remain imperfect, we are counted righteous before God because of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ (Romans 3:20–25). We are fallen, but He is faithful. We are depraved sinners, but His justification makes us saints. We deserve hell, but He makes us heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ for eternity (Romans 8:17).

There is no comparison between our temporal sacrifices in this life and the eternal glory that awaits all His children (Romans 8:18). Don’t take it for granted, redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15-18), reflect the glory of Jesus Christ in all you do (2 Corinthians 3:18), and have faith that God is always faithful to His word (Romans 3:4). He is unchanging (Malachi 3:6). You can count on Him to remain steadfast in His love (1 John 4:8), grace (2 Corinthians 12:9), mercy (Ephesians 2:4–7), and forgiveness (Matthew 6:14–15).

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for making Your presence known to me. I know You are with me whether I feel You as close as my skin or distant as the stars. Please help me never doubt Your provision. Thank You for leading me through Your Holy Spirit, especially to help me make better decisions for Your glory.

Although this world is a fleeting breath, I am thankful that my actions can make an eternal impact for good. Thank You for giving me all the tools needed to serve You. Thank You for Your guidance, protection, and correction. Thank You for being merciful and gracious with me when I fail.

Please help me remember that You are unchanging, consistent, and reliable in a world infused with chaos. You put me at ease and order my steps. Thank You for the gift of Your peace, which, along with Your presence, empowers me to adapt to all circumstances.

Thank You for forgiving me for wandering away from the flock. Whether in a small way for a brief duration or a large way for a significant time, I am thankful for Your redirection back to where I must go. Please help me align with You in every area and every way I can so that I may continue to serve You as effectively as possible.

Thank You for allowing me to use my flaws and former struggles to bless my peers today. I want to spare them the pain I faced as I continue to learn the future pain I can spare myself if I heed the wisdom of my mentors. I am far from perfect at this, but it helps me keep things in perspective, walk in humility, and ultimately accept Your will.

Please forgive me for all my sins and thank You for Your countless provisions, which include Your grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love, which I cannot live without.

Reflection

Whenever we look for God’s gifts from other outlets, we are left empty. The idols fabricated by our hearts may appease our appetites for a brief time, but soon after, they only bring trouble. Even those of us who know the value of proximity to God may occasionally take it for granted. Perhaps the allure of a particular temptation overtakes us, or we forget to stay disciplined about our spiritual nourishment. These are real threats that believers face daily.

Today’s verse reminds us that Jesus Christ offers us peace that we cannot find anywhere else. The world offers fool’s gold, and our adversary, the devil, seeks to destroy us through many avenues. These offers of empty promises and false hopes only lead us astray and distract us from God’s mission for us. 

The devil rarely attacks us in obvious ways. Instead, he exploits our weaknesses and often comes disguised as everything we ever wanted. That’s why we must all remain vigilant.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)

All of us, including me, are capable of stumbling from time to time. Even the most seasoned believers sin and must ask God for help in repenting. We must crucify the desires of the flesh. Thank God for His grace, mercy, love, and forgiveness, which comfort us when we fall short. 

When we find motivation in God’s will for us and demonstrate it in our actions, we will experience His peace in us. The world might be in shambles. Our immediate situation may prove itself difficult. There may be daunting obstacles that stand in the way of our success. But no matter what, we can rest assured that God’s peace will sustain us in all circumstances. 

As today’s verse closes, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The more we experience God’s supernatural help and provision in our times of need, the more confident we will grow that He has us right where we are for a reason.

Application

Praise God for the many tools in our arsenal against evil. He equips us with his full armor, guides us with His word, gives us access to Him in prayer, protects us with His angels, surrounds us with fellow believers, provides us with ways of escape from temptation, and leads us by His Holy Spirit.

All of these assets are priceless as we wage war against evil. All of us should have faith that we have already won the war through the victory Jesus Christ won on our behalf. However, it remains our responsibility to face each battle one by one. That constant obedience will give us peace in God that transcends all understanding.

We must proceed steadfastly and boldly in the direction that God leads us. When circumstances throw us an unexpected detour, we can rest assured that it didn’t take God by surprise. In those moments, we must utilize God’s tools, especially prayer. When we feel least inclined to pursue them, we often need them most.

Take a few moments to consider God’s track record in your personal life. Look at His constant love in the lives of our fellow believers in the Bible. Even when it seemed they had no hope, God made a way for them. In the same way, God was there for them; He will remain there for His children.

God parted the sea for Moses. He delivered Daniel from the lion’s den. He protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. He guided Noah in building an ark for safety during the flood. He empowered King David to have a heart after Him and lead Israel. Why wouldn’t He help you?

Why would we doubt His provision now if He did all that for these flawed sinners among His children like us? God is just as faithful today as He was yesterday and will be tomorrow. In the same way He used them, He can use us for His purposes. Embrace His call upon Your life and seek Him wholeheartedly. May all of us who believe abide in Him, obey Him, and enjoy His peace now and forever.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for forgiving me. Thank You for Your gentleness and enabling me to repent of my numerous sins in Your sight. I know there are some I may not have even noticed I committed, and I ask You to forgive me for those, too.

I am thankful for Your peace in my life, for filling me with Your Holy Spirit, and for His daily guidance. Without Your presence and Your word, I would be lost. Thank You for all Your provisions. Without them, I don’t know what I would do.

The world we live in is fleeting. Please help me focus on what matters most in life and find peace in You. I don’t want to cling to an idol for short-term satisfaction, pleasure, or relief. I receive lasting blessings solely through Jesus Christ, Your Son, and my Lord and Savior. Thank You for not giving like the ruthless world we live in, but instead for offering Your most precious gifts of generosity and love.

Please help me not take Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for granted. Salvation may be a gift, but the cost of offering it to us was the greatest price ever paid: the precious blood of Your Son. I don’t want to lose sight of that, so I ask that You please help me redeem time for eternity.

Reflection

Waiting on the Lord renews our strength. It’s not a pause in God’s work; it’s often where His deepest work begins. Today’s verse echoes this sentiment and encourages us to endure difficult times. Sometimes the shift begins internally, as we feel the pressure in our lives sharpening us. The wait gives us the opportunity to develop not only endurance, but also character traits such as patience and spiritual resilience. While they are often uncomfortable or even costly, these challenges will often expand our capacity. 

Instead of allowing such situations to overwhelm us, we must rely on God for continued sustenance so that weariness doesn’t become our reality. If we remain in our self-reliant sphere, we might fall into the trap of overestimating our role in God’s plan for us. Meanwhile, our reliance on God reshapes everything. It keeps us humble, reminds us that God is in absolute control, and ensures that we remain confident that His timing always prevails for good reason. Surrendering control is not always easy, but if we remember God’s track record, it should become compelling for us to do so. Not out of coercion or force, but a strong desire to delight God and do things His way.

What God develops in us while we wait shows up both internally and externally. Maybe we have allowed negative traits to enter our behavior over time, and they are blocking us from God’s next steps. Perhaps our position of authority at our work has cultivated pride. Maybe we’ve become afraid of failure and are paralyzed by inaction. Is it possible that we’re afraid of letting others down or even seeing ourselves stumble? Could our prior strengths, like patience or godly motivations, have slowly faded? We cannot afford to allow impatience to fuel our desire for instant gratification or to transition to acting with a self-serving mindset.

All these avenues of regression are realities we need to take inventory of, and one way God catches our attention to do so is to slow us down. Why would God send us into the next season unprepared for the responsibility, influence, and pressure that come with it? The reality is that there’s a strong chance we need to lean back into humility, faithfulness, and obedience. Establishing the spiritual disciplines integral to His glory and our success is essential for us before He wants us to move beyond the wait.

Recognizing that God prepares us before He promotes us can shift our attitude towards waiting. Instead of looking at it as a matter of punishment, we can embrace it as a sign of His love for us. Why would we want a promotion that could open the door to larger-scale failure if we still need to get our house in order where we are?

Application

How can we maximize the periods in our lives that involve elements of waiting? The first step we can take is to realize that we are still welcome to take action. Sometimes we need to step out of our bubbles and make moves to determine if God is opening a door for us. We don’t want the wait to slide into an extended season of passivity when, in reality, God is inviting us to finally take a step of faith.

There are also circumstances in which we are waiting on one front while still active on several others. You may be waiting on God’s provision in one area of your life, but He may want you to remain persistent and faithful in the others that aren’t on hold. It’s easy for us to let the waiting bleed into too many sectors at once. Meanwhile, God really wants us to stay steady and show Him that we’re continuing to follow His path for us, even in what is already established. This may happen while we wait for other areas to unfold in His time.

For example, if you want something to happen in the context of a new dating relationship, don’t let it distract you from God’s mission for you in your work. Otherwise, that may indicate that you’re idolizing it and holding back from areas where He has called you to retain as your primary focus. God often wants to give us gifts that complement His calling to us, not those that would distract us from putting Him first.

If you’re looking to apply for a new role at work, don’t compromise on the fantastic work you’ve accomplished, and keep your standards high across the board. We don’t want to have one foot out the door before God has given us clear access and opened the opportunity for that transition. Everything we touch, especially as ambassadors for Christ, reflects a certain level of purpose and excellence. Keep doing extraordinary work, no matter how simple or complicated your current role is. People notice, and we should do it all as if unto God. It is honorable to continue operating at a level that glorifies Him while we wait.

Remember, God is at work in what we can and cannot see. What we may feel is stagnation or even regression may actually serve as points of clarity for us to build from. Imagine remaining in mediocrity only to realize that if we had failed harder, we would have course-corrected sooner and moved further along by now? It’s rough and in some sense unfortunate that it takes these kinds of circumstances to grab our attention, but it’s a reality. 

Those consequences are sometimes God’s hidden blessing, prompting us to change our ways. So whether it’s obvious to us or not, whether it takes extreme measures or a simple nudge of the Holy Spirit, or perhaps something going on in the spiritual realm we cannot even fathom, God is still ultimately working behind the scenes for us when we can’t understand what’s going on. Don’t lose faith just because the process doesn’t coincide with the timeline you envisioned.

Finally, don’t rush the process when God is inviting you to take it slow and absorb the wisdom. Waiting with God shouldn’t look like a punishment, obstacle, or burden. It’s way more important that we abide in Christ and step in with willingness and patience than to try to push through prematurely. Keep in mind that while God gives us a small piece of the blueprint we’re ready to see, He has full knowledge of everything to come. 

Look back on everything in your life right now. I assure you, if you don’t see it clearly already, you may one day realize that even the suffering had its place in God’s plan. That’s the toughest pill to swallow when we’re in those circumstances, but one objective glance backward can help us to remember that even in those circumstances, He was more than faithful. So if you find yourself in a waiting period, don’t lose hope. Your Heavenly Father doesn’t intend to leave or forsake you. He who began a good work in you will see it through to its completion.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for Your presence in my life. Thank You for giving me seasons of waiting to learn from before You re-position me according to Your will. Every day I wake up, I realize how You are building me up to accomplish Your will in Your timing as You see fit. 

Please help me to remain faithful to the process You have in store for me. I need to remember that Your plans and timing are always superior to mine. Please help me to remember that one of the best things I can do in the waiting is to pray for my actions to align with Your will for me.

Please give me the strength to ask for forgiveness, to repent of my sins, and to wholeheartedly commit my works to You. Please help me not to let the accuser of the brethren, the Devil, infiltrate my thoughts, body, mind, soul, spirit, or any other aspect of my being with his lies.

Thank You for enriching my life with access to Your truth. Your Word is the Sword of the Spirit, and I need to wage war against the adversary. I know that no matter how many times I have fallen, You have always been there to pick me up.

Please help me to surrender to You at all times, including when it feels like the best I can do in certain areas of my life is to wait for Your timing. I am so thankful You didn’t give me what I wanted before I was ready to receive it. I don’t want Your gifts to ever distract me from You, the Giver of the gifts.

Thank You for giving me strength. I know that just like the eagle in today’s verse, You will always renew my strength and help me. I don’t need to grow weary or faint when I rely on You and rest in Your sovereignty.

Reflection

There are times in life when we find ourselves in the trenches of battle. It’s not always a physical battle. Sometimes the most daunting battles are in the mind (Romans 12:2). Yet, even in these seasons, God uses them for our good and His glory. They can build our endurance and help make us more resilient (Hebrews 10:36-39). It’s also the way God reminds us of our dependence on Him for consistent help in life (2 Corinthians 3:5). These trials aren’t pleasant and often aren’t easy to understand when we feel stuck in the turmoil.

But despite all that difficulty, we can remain confident that God will help us navigate to the other side (Hebrews 2:18). There’s no guarantee there won’t be collateral damage. However, we can rest assured that God won’t abandon us when we need Him most (Hebrews 13:5). Our most treasured family and friends may let us down, but God never will (Psalm 20:7). 

It’s these kinds of circumstances that demonstrate that there is a time and purpose for every season, just like today’s verse states. That includes the seasons that we often cannot make sense of until we look back in time. I didn’t understand how frail and vulnerable I was until I faced some obstacles in my health. I thought I was invincible, and a lot of what I did was fueled by selfish ambition. It confused me that God would allow me to face hospitalization multiple times. But instead of pushing me away from God, it drew me closer to Him (Galatians 6:9). 

Today I can look back on that season with confidence, and although it’s not written in stone, I can reflect on why God likely allowed most of it to happen. That’s where today’s quote comes into play. God doesn’t owe us an explanation, but there may come times when we look back and see that there’s no coincidence with God. 

There were reasons why He allowed those things to happen, and I am thankful because I can see that season had a clear purpose (Romans 8:28). He not only restored me from that pit but also gave me an alternative path that helped me understand why He may have ordained my suffering. Not one triumph or tragedy is wasted in the hands of our Maker (James 1:2-4). 

Sometimes the test doesn’t come in the form of difficulty. Other times, it’s in our success that our character is tested (Luke 16:10). Do we exercise stewardship and humility when we’re empowered with greater responsibility? If we’re in a position of authority, is our tendency to serve our own interests, or do we remain altruistic and selfless in nature? 

Our fallen nature does us no favors in these situations (2 Corinthians 4:16). That’s why it’s so crucial for us to remain in lockstep with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and pursue an underlying reason for our actions that aligns with God’s will for us. When we remain anchored to God and aligned with His desires for us, we will more often than not proceed in wisdom (Proverbs 2:6-7, James 1:5-8). 

For example, you may have acquired new skills and a God-given opportunity to use them. When there’s a clear fork in the road, do you more often than not use that talent to serve yourself or to serve God? In another instance, someone obtained a life-changing employment opportunity. It’s a demanding job, and the temptation to become a workaholic is real. In this scenario, would you still find time to connect to God, fellowship with His people, and make time for spiritual discipline (Proverbs 23:4-5)? 

Often, we know in our hearts when something is slowly getting dangerously close to becoming an idol (1 Corinthians 10:14). That’s when it’s easiest to recognize and change course. If we allow it to grow from a foothold to a stronghold, it’s only a matter of time before it consumes us and becomes much more difficult to conquer.

There are also seasons when we are confronted with waiting (Psalm 27:14). These are the kinds that demand that we continue to obey God, trust in His sovereign plan, and surrender to His will. Are you waiting for a relationship or perhaps even a marriage one day? Those are gifts that God may provide in His timing, but they’re not guaranteed (James 4:13-14). 

I know I have found seasons when I was in a relationship, and they included packets of happiness; they also presented some unexpected challenges. I assume you can multiply that several times over in marriage for better or worse (1 Corinthians 7:28). Likewise, there are moments that in my singleness I focus on the freedom and peace, but the highlight reel of what it was like in a relationship is not lost on me (1 Corinthians 7:33-34). 

But it’s important to recognize the big picture. One is not really superior to the other; they just come with different pros and cons. Every relationship that looks perfect isn’t. Every single person who looks content 100% of the time and has no longing for a partner isn’t what they seem, unless they’ve been given the gift of celibacy (1 Corinthians 7:7-9). 

The core of what I want to emphasize is that, as humans, we tend to want what we don’t have, what is forbidden, or what has a certain degree of novelty. It’s better to find our contentment in God and trust Him to supply our real needs (1 Timothy 6:6-10, Philippians 4:19). The true test of a relationship is when the fireworks fade, and the honeymoon is in the rearview mirror. It’s not when everything is flowing smoothly. It’s not when you’re experiencing the pinnacle of mutual understanding or shared intimacy. 

The challenge starts when real life punches one or both of you in the gut, and you aren’t showing up at 100% anymore. When the romance is depleted because you’re raising kids together or facing financial turmoil. 

Do you still hold space for each other? Do you sit together in the chaos and seek God for peaceful refuge? Do they stay by your side and appreciate you on such a deep level that they are not just your romantic love, but also your best friend? These are the kind of questions you may want to explore and experience answers to before you commit to spending the rest of your life together (Ephesians 5:22-33).

You’re going to miss those days when you were single from time to time. It doesn’t have to break your relationship. So you might as well maximize that season of singleness you’re trying so hard to escape. Surrender it to God and keep in mind that you’re not living in a disadvantaged position. A lot of people on the opposite side wish they could go back to where you are. Don’t take that lightly and recognize that no one has it all. 

Life consists partly of trade-offs and compromises. Don’t let solitude become isolation; draw closer to God and invest your focus on Him for eternal dividends (Matthew 6:20-21). Enjoy the freedom of being accountable, first and foremost, to God (Galatians 5:1). Don’t rush the process—pray that He would shape your heart to wait for the right connection in His timing (Isaiah 60:22, 1 Peter 5:6).

The last kind of season I want to talk about is the hidden season. You may have stood on the sidelines for a long time waiting for that promotion. It’s hard when you feel ready for the next step in life, but it’s nowhere in sight, or you haven’t made significant progress toward it. 

Perhaps the obstacle is self-imposed through passivity, worry, fear, or sin, but at other times it’s a matter of timing. God might literally have you in hiding until the time is right. You may find yourself in one instance pushing for something or even trying to force it to happen. Then one day, you wake up, having forgotten you even wanted it, and it falls into your lap with little to no effort. It may even feel anti-climactic when it arrives because you blew it out of proportion in your head. 

But now you realize that you weren’t as ready as you thought you were. God may show you that while you were in that quiet, hidden season, you were trained. God helped you hone in discipline (1 Corinthians 9:27), solidify your identity in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and enjoy an abundance of intimacy with God (James 4:8). Now that God has chiseled your character with that solid foundation, you’re ready to put it into action. Keep in mind that:

Your growth isn’t tied to what season you find yourself in. It’s contingent on how faithful you are through it. 

Application

Now that we’ve considered several kinds of seasons and some examples of each, I want to pivot to how we can apply this insight in practice (2 Timothy 3:16-17). When we embrace the season, we open the door for God to help us learn and experience the full lesson. The last thing we want to do is show a lack of appreciation for the opportunity God has given us or failing to make the best of the journey. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a season of trial, responsibility, patience, hiding, or something else altogether. 

You may even want to ask yourself what sort of season you’re in. After you identify it, you may begin to recognize what God is teaching you in that season. In a hidden season, God may simply want you to remember that human applause is overrated (Galatians 1:10). He may want to teach you to focus on His approval over man’s so that your motivation doesn’t stem from people (Proverbs 29:25). 

Instead, He desires for you to experience firsthand that His approval outweighs everything. Overvaluing others’ approval is not healthy. It’s only helpful if you aren’t significantly elevated or deflated by people in general. It doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate compliments, advice, or encouragement. It just means you no longer depend on them to fuel your growth (Colossians 3:23-24).

In waiting seasons, God wants you to see that His timing is better than yours. He loves you more than you love yourself (Romans 5:8), He knows you better than you know yourself (Psalm 139:1-4), and He knows everything. You can trust Him and recognize that, even if your life is in complete shambles, He can still restore you and get you through everything you encounter (Job 42:10). Keep your eyes on Him and remain patient (Colossians 3:1-2).

In the seasons of great responsibility of any kind, God might want to examine your character. If power, money, or influence start to lead you to compromise, He may see that you’re not ready for the next step yet. On the other hand, if He sees that your priorities are in order, it may be the first step of many more that demonstrate your obedience (1 Peter 5:10). God isn’t expecting perfection—He’s looking for faithfulness and growth. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fumble the ball once in a while (Romans 3:10-11). Even the best of us fall short from time to time (Romans 3:23). The key is that you stay close to Him at all times and remember that you can talk to Him about everything (Jeremiah 29:13).

Finally, in those difficult seasons, there isn’t any one-size-fits-all answer here. Some of you reading this have gone through pain, suffering, and trials I can’t fathom the severity of. However, I remember the trials I have faced and even those I can see have clear reasons for their occurrence. 

I can empathize with people who have faced similar obstacles, or are even in the trenches right now. Having that first-hand experience empowers me to equip them. God helped me endure those turbulent storms for a purpose (Matthew 20:28). Now I can help some people navigate amid their chaos, and I can do so from a place of understanding. A place where I genuinely have a grasp of their pain and can provide them with some practical guidance to overcome it. 

No matter where you are, why you’re there, or how long it takes, God is with you at all times if you are one of His children. God will see you through the other side. (Romans 8:35-39).

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for another day of life. Thank You for Your presence in every season of my life. Thank You for not leaving or forsaking me. You’ve shown me that I can always trust that no matter what happens, I will always find refuge in You.

Please help me avoid rushing through any season and to maximize each moment as a potential learning experience. Every day is a gift, and I want to make the best of them by Your grace for Your glory. 

Please continue to guide me so that no matter what season I am in, I can boldly seek Your providence. Please help me remember there’s a purpose for all of them. 

I am certain I don’t need to fear anyone or anything, because I fear You, God. After all, the fear of man is a snare, but fearing You is reverence, worship, and respect, and it is one of the most pivotal keys to long-term spiritual victory.

Culture urges us to follow our hearts and pursue worldly comforts, yet our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9). We must resist the lusts of the flesh, the eyes, and pride (1 John 2:16). Today, something as ordinary as endless social media scrolling or seeking approval can dominate our lives. Career ambitions, material possessions, and the drive for a perfect image can all become modern idols, subtly taking our focus from God. While the world says, “he that dies with the most toys wins,” true gain comes from godliness with contentment (1 Timothy 6:6-10).

We are all fallible and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). Everyone struggles with their battles, some visible, others hidden. Today’s verse reminds us of this shared experience and God’s ongoing faithfulness and mercy (1 Corinthians 1:9, Psalm 103:8). 

Jesus Christ empathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 6:20). He faced every temptation, yet remained sinless (Hebrews 4:15). We are vulnerable, easily drawn by selfish desires, so we must combat them with Christ’s help (2 Corinthians 10:3–5). Relying on the Holy Spirit for self-control, especially in our weaknesses, is crucial for victory (Galatians 5:22–23).

The latter portion of our verse reads, “But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Isn’t that assurance a beautiful reflection of God’s character? It can serve as motivation for us to overcome addictions, vices, sinful habits, and all the other components of our lifestyle that fail to measure up to God’s ideal for us.

Application

What tends to become an idol for you? We all struggle with idols in different forms. Not having one today doesn’t mean we’re immune later. Overestimating our willpower leaves us vulnerable. Keller’s quote helps us examine our lives: What pulls your heart away from Jesus? Is your focus on God, or have you replaced it with something else?

These are practical questions to assess whether lesser pursuits allure us. They help reveal where our weaknesses may surface. That insight enables us to rely on God’s provisions—the whole armor of God, prayer, and total reliance on Him to conquer such sins (Ephesians 6:10-20, Romans 8:37). The sooner we confront these issues, the less likely they are to become enduring strongholds.

To better recognize and address these idols, try taking a few minutes each day for candid reflection. Prayerfully ask God to reveal anything that is competing for your loyalty or attention. Regular self-examination can help you identify patterns and gently redirect your focus back to Him. If it helps, consider writing them down to track your progress; it may help you hone in on which parts of your life need urgent attention and become a future reminder of God’s faithfulness.

I rest assured knowing that even when I have succumbed to sin or lost battles, God sustains and strengthens me. He enables me to repent, accept His forgiveness, forgive myself, and attempt a better path forward (1 John 1:9). This trajectory draws from past mistakes to help me grow, learning not to repeat them. Don’t let your past mistakes condemn you (Romans 8:1). 

No matter how many times we may stumble, God’s grace is new and available every single day (Lamentations 3:22-24). His mercy is there for us when we struggle, and He is always ready to help us begin again. Let this truth bring comfort and reassure anyone battling guilt or shame. God consistently extends His love and forgiveness to us. He is with us everywhere we go (Joshua 1:9).

Each day, let us remember that the main takeaway is to trust in God’s strength and promises, not our own. By relying on Him, we find renewal and empowerment to live according to His will, confident in His unfailing love and grace. 

To put this into practice, consider setting aside a few minutes each morning to read a short scripture or pray, specifically asking God to help you trust Him for the day ahead. Even a simple prayer like, “Lord, please be my strength today and guide my heart,” can help center our thoughts on His power and presence.

Today’s verse and quote remind us of the value of faithfulness, discipline, persistence, and focus. These traits are essential for breaking through the noise and serving God effectively (Hebrews 12:2). Our verse of the day encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, promising that in due season we will reap if we do not lose heart. 

This verse highlights how God honors steadfastness and continual obedience, even when results are not immediately visible. If we remain faithful in doing good, especially when it feels unnoticed or difficult, God sees that we are living out these characteristics in accordance with His will.

For example, practicing faithfulness might simply mean keeping your word (Proverbs 6:1-3), whether that is showing up on time to meet a friend (Ephesians 5:15-16), following through on a promise to pray for someone (James 5:16), or staying committed to reading your Bible daily even when you don’t feel inspired (Matthew 4:4). Persistent small acts like these allow God to work through us in ways we may not always see. 

We cannot assume that what happens in the spiritual realm is directly proportionate to the circumstances we perceive with our eyes (1 Corinthians 2:9). The small gestures that only God may notice can speak volumes compared to magnificent feats in the eyes of a broader audience. 

The scope of what we do matters, but it shouldn’t be our first priority. If we chase worldly success and validation, we miss the process of doing things God’s way (Isaiah 55:8-9). Remember your faithful seasons in obscurity, which God used to prepare you for the next part of your mission (Ephesians 3:8-13). From a spiritual point of view, these hidden times were no less important than your current role, with more responsibility and influence (Matthew 23:12).

Application

Some of us may not lead millions, but we may be called to lead a few people more deeply (Matthew 9:37-38). Depth and breadth in our work are not always mutually exclusive, and either way, we cannot measure which is better. We also don’t control the one God assigns to us (1 Corinthians 12:18). It is normal to want growth, but quality often matters more than quantity. We never want to water down God’s Word for the sake of growth (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The key is that we only seek it with motives grounded in God’s will and stay open to the changes God brings (Isaiah 43:19).

Have you encouraged someone this week? It’s the simple moments like these that compound for eternity. You may not realize it now, but a few kind words or a few minutes of attentive listening to someone can plant seeds of transformation we cannot quantify.

God noticed the poor widow’s obedience in her small but meaningful gift (Luke 21:1-4). He also saw the courage and influence of the Apostle Paul during his ministry (2 Timothy 4:7). Who are we to measure the eternal value of each act to God? Our best choice is to stay in our lane and aim for excellence in what we do for Him (Hebrews 12:1-2).

If our work for God now involves more responsibility or influence, we should treat it seriously. New seasons often include challenges and require us to ask God for fresh wisdom, guidance, protection, and support. We must trust that if God gives us new tasks, He also gives us the resources to complete them (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Failures, losses, and setbacks are normal parts of growth. Throughout Scripture, we see many faithful people experience hardship and obscurity before God used them in powerful ways (Proverbs 24:16).

Joseph was sold into slavery and wrongly imprisoned, but God raised him up to save many lives (Genesis 37:12-36). Moses spent years with the Israelites in the wilderness before witnessing the promised land (Exodus 15:22). David was overlooked and had to flee from Saul before becoming king after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 30:6, 1 Samuel 13:14). 

Like them, we do not truly live if we always play it safe and never take thoughtful risks. In these moments, we realize how much we need God to fill our gaps (Philippians 4:19). It is inspiring to see God clearly elevate someone, especially when only His power explains their success (Psalm 115:3). This shows that no one could overcome great challenges without God’s grace (2 Corinthians 9:8).

May we remain humble, knowing that all of the eternal value we have done, do, or will do is enabled by our Savior (James 4:10). Let’s commit to seeking Him first, using our gifts faithfully, and encouraging others. Without Him, we are nothing and have nothing. But with Jesus Christ on our side, we can be sure that we are more than conquerors, capable of great things when we keep our eyes on Him (Romans 8:37).

To put this message into practice, I want to invite each of us to a simple weekly challenge: intentionally encourage at least one person every day this week. Whether it is through a kind word, a short message, a prayer, or a helping hand, let’s look for opportunities to lift someone up. Small acts of encouragement can make a lasting impact, and they reflect God’s love to those around us (Hebrews 3:13).

Dear God,

Thank You, Father, for another day of life. Thank You for creating me and giving me purpose. Without You, I would be lost and unable to pursue anything meaningful.

I am thankful that You have involved me in Your plans despite my iniquities and shortcomings. Thank You for forgiving me. Please help me to repent of all my sins and seek You first at all times.

Please give me the discipline to serve You daily and surrender every part of my life to You.

Thank You, God, for enabling me to do great things. Please help me remember that the little gestures have outstanding significance in Your eyes.

Although I don’t always see their value, I know You do in ways I may never understand. I am thankful for the opportunities You have opened for me to grow, serve You, and focus on Your will.

Please help me not let distractions overcome me. I need to submit to Your timing for everything and continue to fight the good fight of faith.
